Get To Know Performer Florence Mak

1. What has been your favorite part of working on the Amplify Series thus far?

As a performer and founding member of LYNX, I might be a wee bit biased, but being part of this organization has transformed my life both musically and personally. Specifically through the Amplify Series, the poets, composers, and performers that I have met throughout the years have inspired me to think and listen deeper. Being part of this family has also empowered me to seek ways to create a more inclusive community in the arts and the world at large.

2. How did you discover your passion for performing and what is the most exciting part about it?

I have loved music for as long as I remember. Having grown up performing as a soloist, my world opened up when I started collaborating with other artists. The process of discovering, sharing, and creating something spontaneous is continuously rewarding and inspiring. Being able to connect with the audience through music is the icing on top!

3. How has this music differed from the music you perform more regularly, if at all?

Through the Amplify Series, getting to know and learn from nonspeaking autistic poets whose texts have inspired composers and performers has been a humbling experience. Being part of an organization that is so deeply committed to this community and creating inclusive concert experiences as a musician is very unusual. I am grateful and honoured to celebrate and amplify the worlds of poetry and music through song.
